At The Language and Behavior Center we offer feeding therapy that is rooted in evidence-based ABA principles of shaping positive mealtime behaviors.

Through evaluation by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst specializing in pediatric feeding disorders an individualized treatment plan will be created that is unique to your child and family needs.

Areas that can be targeted during feeding therapy are:

  • Expanding variety of food and liquids accepted

  • Reduction of inappropriate mealtime behaviors when new foods are introduced

  • Increasing volume of food and liquids accepted

  • Increasing independence in self feeding

  • Chewing skills

  • Using utensils

  • Open cup and/or straw drinking

Key Characteristics of Food Selectivity

Being a picky eater is a normal stage of any child’s development and it usually happens between the ages of 2 and 4 years old. Food selectivity is different from a child “just being a picky eater”.

Here are the key characteristics of food selectivity:

  • Accepts only a limited variety of food

  • Excess or extreme distress during mealtimes (i.e. tantrumming, throwing utensils/food, spitting out food, aggression, self injurious behavior, leaving mealtime area)

  • Gagging or vomiting when eating

  • Refusing food based on texture, color, brand etc.

  • Taking longer than 30 minutes to finish a meal

  • Packing food in the mouth

  • Not eating enough food

Hidden Cost
Consequences of ignoring feeding challenges

Unresolved feeding challenges can lead to significant health and developmental concerns.

Research shows that limited diets often result in obesity, malnutrition, and tooth decay, as well as long-term risks like diabetes and heart disease. Mealtime struggles can also increase family stress and strain relationships.

At TLBC, our evidence-based feeding therapy addresses these risks by fostering healthy eating habits, improving physical and emotional well-being, and empowering families to thrive. We are here to answer any questions you have!
